Pretty, pretty Clémence has written a charming new book, Ageless Beauty the French Way: Secrets from Three Generations of French Beauty Editors, and though I am allergic to most how-the-French-do-it books, I did like this one. It is chock-full of excellent advice she learned from her mother and grandmother, both of whom were beauty editors for French Vogue. Here, she runs down her favorite beauty splurges and bargains.

beauty sponge

“The Ulta beauty blender sponge has become an indispensable makeup tool that perfectly applies my concealer.”

facial cotton

“I also love Shiseido Facial Cotton for its extra soft texture.”

bye bye

“Another one of my favorites is Bye Bye Under Eye by It Cosmetics. Once you have applied this genius concealer, it erases any traces left from a late party the night before. On top, I like to dab on some YSL Touche Éclat. Not only is it a concealer, but also a light reflector that makes your skin come alive. It is one of my splurge products but it is really worth it. It is also one of
my mother’s favorite makeup products.”

micellar

“Growing up in Paris, I used to go to the local pharmacy to buy most of my skincare products and I have really enjoyed finding most of these brands at Duane Reade, my New York local drugstore. These include the Avène Micellar Lotion and Avène Thermal Spring Water (an essential step in my cleansing routine!). The Lotion is very gentle, it leaves my skin soft and moisturized after I apply it. As for the Thermal Water, it has now become part of my morning and evening routine to spray some of it on my face before I apply my moisturizer or serum. It soothes and softens the skin. It is also a natural way also to bring some hydration.”

“A makeup item that makes me feel incredible: Dior Capture Totale Dreamskin Advanced. It’s great skin perfector that gives instant correction and radiance.”

clarins oil
“For the shower: Just taking a few minutes to apply some Clarins Tonic Body Treatment Oil on my body and pampering myself
makes me feel more energized. To this day, I still have my selection of “feel-good products” that give me an extra boost on the days I need it most, and the Clarins Tonic oil is one of them.”

I was so excited the first time I went to a French Pharmacie, convinced I’d finally come out with the secret to the glowing, natural French look. I bought all the French girl recommendations. Every single one of them clogged my pores and made me break out. It was such a bummer. So unfortunately, I am stuck with the ugly American packaging of Cetaphil and Oil of Olay.

  2. When I was pregnant two winters ago, the Clarins Tonic Body Treatment Oil was a lifesaver for my extra sensitive and extremely dry skin. I initially bought it to prevent stretch marks, which it did really well, but the body oil provided such welcome relief from constant dry skin itchiness. I’d love to find another cruelty free version of this body oil (Clarins tests on animals) in time for next winter.

I have to second the IT bye bye undereye concealer. I was given a sample of it at Sephora and omg it is amazing! It will cover anything. I was so taken with it that I watched a promo video in which it is used to cover tattoos. COMPLETELY.

I didn’t use my beauty blender for several years after receiving it gratis as a MUA. My theory was, “if fingers are good enough for Bobbi Brown, they’re good enough for me!” Then, on a whim, I tried it….and I’ve been hooked ever since.

I might be the only woman on Earth that isn’t in love with It’s Bye Bye Undereye. I find it really thick and dry. But I love Touche Éclat. I don’t have much for dark circles, so maybe that’s why.
