Things I bought, things I want

No.6 shearling boots

The other day it was so cruelly cold out that I marched right over to No. 6, and purchased myself these shearling-lined boots, which I have somehow been living without all these years and now I don’t know how that was even possible. They are so comfortable and so, so damn cozy that I practically look forward to walking the dogs on super-chilly nights.

Eskayel quilt

This quilt is by Eskayel, one of my favorite producers of unstoppably good prints, and I nabbed it the other day when they were running a Cyber Monday special. It looks excellently matchy-clashy with my headboard, which is also upholstered in Eskayel fabric.

Kapital scarf
And on that theme, this quilt scarf might be crazy, but it’s a kind of crazy I can get behind.

Herschel fanny pack

All the cool kids are walking around my hipster neighborhood in fanny packs these days, and I am a little embarrassed to admit that I’m sort of the eensiest bit intrigued. This one in millennial pink is almost impossibly trendy, but I think it’s super-cute anyway. (Here’s a slightly more grown-up option in black velvet, and an adorable crocheted one from Rachel Comey).

Vince hoodie sweater

This space dye hoodie just looks like the coziness. It’d make an excellent layer.

Lauren Manoogian neck pillow

The chicest neck pillow ever, from designer Lauren Manoogian. This would actually make a really good gift, if you’re doing some last-minute shopping.

Farrow top

I’m always on the lookout for red tops, because the color looks good on me, but it’s frequently a struggle to find the exactly right one: either the red is wrong—usually too orange-y, sometimes too brown—or the item in question is overly prissy or fussy. It’s rare that I happen upon a red top that gets everything right, but this one comes pretty damn close. It’s ever-so-slightly fussy, but manageable, and well-priced too.

Everlane has a great fanny pack in that it is contoured to make it less bulky around the waist…or crossbody-style.

No. 6 clog sizing question…On the web site they say to order your true US size for the shearling boots, but the European size they have next to my size is a size larger. So a size 5 US is listed as a size 36 European. I don’t get it. I’ve always worn a size 35 European. Hummm….

Fanny packs are ALL OVER Austin––pseudo hipster capital of the world. And I want one. To wear across my chest or back. Because I don’t realize how truly old I am and how ridiculous I might look.

And, yes, to the red blouse. It’s so fabulously DIFFERENT!

Bum bags are decidedly NOT all over Sacramento, but I bought a black Yvonne Kone bag last month when she did a 40% off. I had my eye on that bag for a long time, thinking it would be perfect for travel.

I like the chest/back sling look, also, age be damned…and I don’t do backpacks unless I’m hiking, so it’s a compromise.

@ c.w. I wear a 5.5-6 and have No.6 boots (not the shearling ones) in the 36. That style fits me perfectly in 36 and I suspect would be a bit large on you but perhaps not so much that it could be solved with thicker socks?

The No. 6 boots, especially the shearling ones with the added bulk of the lining, do tend to run small. I think somewhere they also say that their 36, 37 etc. aren’t normal European sizing. So if they say you’d take a 36, I’d definitely go for that. (I wear a US 8 and mine are a 39).

What Susanna said. The shearling ones are sized up at least in part because of the bulkiness of the lining. I have two pairs of those and two pairs of the regular ones, all of them 39’s as recommended, and honestly the shearling ones are quite snug (not so much as to be uncomfortable, but enough that if I’d gotten 38’s like I usually do they’d be too small). Eventually the shearling gets matted down and they loosen up, but not like a whole size or anything – just enough that you can wear a medium-weight sock comfortably. They know what they’re doing. Get the 36’s.

So, handily we are about to go to (my dear hometown) NY, where we always stay mere blocks from the No. 6 store… but somehow I have never entered the place! Here’s my question, Kim: These look like they could fit on a wide foot; what do you think?? Of course I could just go on in and try them on myself, but you might incentivize me! Great find!

I don’t have a wide foot, but it has gotten wider with age. What I can tell you is that the No. 6 shearling boots do take a minute to break in–and it was painful until they did. I couldn’t wear them for long stretches of time. Once they broke in, though, it was pure heaven. I’ve had mine for five years and I still reach for them. I’m in love with them. Most comfortable boots ever. (Note: there’s not a lot of ankle support in them, the upper part is a lot looser/more open than the picture shows, unless they’ve changed them.)

If you are in NYC and can try them on, I’d recommend that. I did that, and the sales folks were really helpful with sizing, etc.

I second Teresa’s advice: No.6 sizing is all over the map—sometimes I’m a 38, but often I’m a 39, which I never am anywhere else—and if you have the opportunity to try them on in person, that’s always best.

I have a wide food too and have never had problems with things not fitting. Definitely try them on while you’re there, but you should be good to go!

I got my impossibly cool niece a waist pack for Christmas! And I was in NYC on Monday and wandered past the Glossier showroom and might have stopped in and bought her a few things there, too.

I have a butt pack from Urban Outfitters that’s obnoxiously iridescent. I mostly wear black/dark blue so it stands out. I get lots of complements from the 20 yos and always know where my keys are #Iweardon’tcare

I love the look of the clog boots, but I’d slip and fall flat on my ass! And that pretty red blouse is really a “party in a top” isn’t it?

I’ve been stalking those No. 6 boots (along with the New School Clog) for years, and was thinking of making them my Christmas present. When I saw your post today, I took it as a sign and finally ordered them! I’m hoping they will make our miserable Detroit winters a little more bearable…
