My nose runs in the cold, and it’s undignified—if human. So once it starts getting seriously frigid out, I never go out without one of my Liberty of London hankies—they add a touch of glamour to an otherwise inelegant moment. Liberty just released a whole lot of fantastic new options, and I’m having a tough time making up my mind but I’m pretty sure I’m going for this one. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, or to avoid overseas shipping, try this Etsy shop. The handkerchiefs are just a bit smaller is all.
- These embroidered vintage photos of noted figures by artist Victoria Villasana are really something. (Colossal)
- And I like these noir-ish photos of L.A. (Flavorwire)
- Here’s the trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie, The Phantom Thread. It sure looks like a departure. (Kottke)

- The best TV shows of the year so far. (Vulture)
I do love my jeans and wear them all but constantly, but there are times when I’m in the mood to go a little snappier, and that’s when I reach for a nice pair of tailored trousers. I like them on the skinny side, and this can prove difficult because I am wide of hip, but the following pairs all look like they’d do the trick, starting with this dark grey pair from Vince.
I really do have a thing for red lately, and thinkthese look just fantastic.
These have a very subtle floral metallic print, which could be fun.
A good tuxedo pant is just a good thing to own, and you can dress them way up if you care to.
This is Nili Lotan’s excellent Tel Aviv trouser in
Here’s a pretty well-priced pair.
These are for those of you who complain that I only ever show cropped pants.
Finding skinny pants in extended sizes isn’t easy, but I think these are pretty good.
Everlane’s trouser has a comfy elastic waist, and looks really wearable.
These are denim, which is cute.
A very elegant pleated pair.
I’ve shown you these before; they’re Topshop’s cigarette trouser and they’re dirt cheap.
- This taxi driver took pictures of people in the back of his cab, and the results are fantastic.

Here is one item I think it’s always a good idea to invest in, because it is so easy to feel shlumpy in drab winter outerwear, and a nice, snappy coat makes you instead positively exude chic. I have more coats than I know what to do with, but was sorely tempted by a lot of these, starting with this one, which has such excellent lapels.
From APC: a nice herringbone tweed that’d look great with jeans or more dressed up.
This is Rachel Comey and not cheap, but I really wanted to include a couple of colorful options and they were in short supply. Also, it’s got a really appealingly nubby texture.
Nothing cozier than a hooded faux fur coat.
The stripe at the hem here adds just the right amount of interest.
A classic shape, and a perfect tomato red.
A little on the crazy side, but good crazy, I think.
This is alpaca, which always looks so great, and I love the idea of a creamy white coat.
The oversized lapels here are so damn chic.
I had to include a leopard choice, of course.
I just think this duffle coat is the most stylish thing ever.
I like the subtle military look here.
Such a perfect, blazing autumnal color, and I really like the texture.
The ribbed, knit cuff is what makes this faux fur standout.
Just a really good houndstooth.
Why not something sweet and peachy pink?
Just as elegant as the day is long.
I like army green any old time, but it’s an especially good color for this time of year, and it is so unexpected on this velvet top.
These pants are really well-tailored, and I like the cuff ankles.
A very snappy blazer for when you want to look especially put together.
A Barbour jacket with Liberty of London lining: perfection.
This super-soft sweater in camo is the type of item I’d put on highest rotation.
