I was not a denim shirt person until fairly recently, when I acquired a nicely oversized one from The Great that I now wear with stunning regularity. It’s pretty casual, and I’m looking for more tailored options, as well as ones that have a little something interesting going on (some people look fantastic in those with Western-style pockets—and I’ve included one below, just in the spirit of pleasing everyone—but that’s not so much my thing). I like wearing them best with jeans, for a classic Canadian Tuxedo look.
A very nice, ultra-faded, well-priced option.
J. Crew’s Always cotton-chambray shirt is pretty much perfect. It’s also forever sold out in most sizes, so I’ve linked to Net A Porter, where it is simply sold out in many but not all sizes.
Here’s a perfectly adorable Western-style shirt, for those who are so inclined.
I’ve got my eye on this shirt—also from J. Crew. It feels very 70s Lauren Hutton.
And here’s a slightly spendy (so of course it’s my favorite) denim tuxedo top. Clever.
And finally: I like this one because it’s hefty enough to be worn as a jacket.
I have 6 denim/chambray shirts at last count. And I bought a denim kimono from the gap recently, at Andrea’s instigation.I’m slightly embarrassed, but they all get worn regularly! Even the western-style one.

Just purchased my third (or fourth?) denim shirt — this time from & Other Stories — and it’s a dream fit. Great for those of us who work in offices, but don’t want to dress like we do: http://www.stories.com/us/Ready-to-wear/Tops/Blouses_Shirts/Ruffle_Collar_Chambray_Shirt/102346007-0358271003.2

Great shirt! But why, why, why do websites photograph clothes so stoopidly? They describe the unusual (and cute) ruffled collar, then shoot it with the model’s hair covering the neckline! Duh.

I have 6 or 7 chambray/denim shirts, but no Western style. My favorite, which looks like the J. Crew Lauren Hutton one Kim found, is from Uniqlo and I don’t remember if it’s a men’s or women’s. Some seasons Madewell has great ones. Ditto Ralph Lauren and Zara. I don’t wear them a lot but I’m still drawn to them, enough to be craving the J. Crew shirt. (See definition of insanity.) I only wear them tucked in and never with jeans, even black or white denim. Didn’t get the memo when the Canadian tux was designated cool. I just love them with tailored trousers, summer or winter, but they’re especially great for the months when the weather is in between warm and cold. White isn’t flattering to me, so chambray fills the basic white shirt slot everyone’s supposed to have in their wardrobe. And they’re ageless, aren’t they?

I just bought my first, too, from JCrew Factory. Question: When did it become a Canada tuxedo (and why)? When I was growing up in NYC we called it a Texas tuxedo!

Still called Texas Tuxedo in Texas. I am religious about not wearing my denim shirt with my jeans because Tex Tux was so drilled into me when I was younger. Oy and Egad.

I’m from Canada and they’re always referred to as Texas Tuxedo’s here.

Headz-up on the TopShop shirt…I had to dash to Nordstrom this morning and was delighted to see it hanging on the rack, but….it is cut W I D E. Like really, really, really wide. Maybe it looks great on. It was made out of lovely heavy denim.

What’s with that new half-tuck???

I can’t get into it – it just screams hockey player to me 🙂

Me too. I had a few – I always bought, then donated….and suddenly I am into chambray and denim in a big way recently. I have bought three and am resisting more. They just look right
I still want the jcrew one even though I have it’s levis twin.
The western type is one of those things I like on other people, not me. It makes me bulkier somehow.

Banana Republic’s Dillon-Fit Denim Utility Shirt ($68, but you usually can get it for 40% off) is also a good choice. Fits well — not too blousy and wide — soft material and a really nice shade of blue.

I just bought the JCrew “Always” shirt on sale online (30% off) on their website. They have more sizes than Net.
