Don’t need, must have
These Day of the Dead correspondence cards from Smythson are simultaneously badass and elegant.
Tuesday trifecta
I keep seeing circle bags everywhere, and I’ve decided they’re kind of fun. They don’t take themselves too seriously, but at the same time aren’t perilously wacky. A good bag for bopping around on the weekend. This first one is rather sleek.
I like the neutral hue here.
A nice, slightly rugged option.
Monday links
- These photos of massive waves crashing in Australia are rather awesome. (Colossal)
- I found this piece, about the clothing of grief, to be quite poignant. (Racked)
- 18 of the most political moments in Oscars history. (Elle)
- The highs and lows of last night’s Oscars. (Vulture)
- And finally, the best and worst of the Oscars red carpet. (The Cut)
Things I bought, things I want
I’m pretty much over splurgy sneakers—give me some Vans or Nikes and I’m perfectly happy most of the time—but I did go in for these, because they are dead ringers for a beloved Isabel Marant pair I have that is now completely busted. Plus, they’ve got a subtle platform, which is nice for a little height. And they’re wicked comfortable.
I think the blue on this silk button down is to die.
Just a nice pair of boyfriend jeans in a good wash.
Lately I’ve gotten it in my head that I need a pair of pale pink sunglasses, and I think these would do just fine (there are also these, which are a good bit cheaper).
Friday links
- Seven of the coolest rooms anywhere. (Mental Floss)
- 25 notable women on style. (The Cut)
- This supercut of the early roles of some 2017 Oscar nominees is not unentertaining. (Flavorwire)
- Hideous. (Jezebel)
- These photos of gangsters, prostitutes, and drag queens in Tokyo’s red light district, circa the late 60s-early 70s, are rather intense. (Dangerous Minds)
Shall we take a moment to consider backpacks?
I like the idea of a backpack a lot—they seem like the choice of smart, cool women who have more important things on their minds than what bag to wear. And if you’re shlepping a lot around, they’re so much more comfortable than a big, heavy purse. I think I will go crazy if I try to write my entire book in my apartment so I’ve been scouting out other places that I can work, and thinking about bags I can carry my computer in too, and a backpack just seems to make a lot of sense.
There is something quite appealing about a super-basic, no-frills nylon version.
But this buttery leather pouch-shaped option is quite nice too.
Extremely minimal and super-chic.
A gorgeous, splurgetsatic blue suede choice from Mansur Gavriel.
This one kind of looks like the one from Mansur, but it’s super-cheap.
And I like that this looks like a bucket bag.
