Cheap and chic of the week

I like this picture of Caroline de Maigret better than most carefully staged-to-not-look-staged street style photos, because it catches her looking imperfect and rumpled, but still rather fantastic in that most powerhouse of wardrobe staples, the white shirt. This time of year in particular, nothing beats it for all-around chic, comfort and utility, and—astonishing though it may seem—I appear to have gotten through practically the whole summer without bringing you a roundup of them. So here are a bunch, all under $75, because I’m nice like that.

perfect shirt

Your standard classic long-sleeved button-down, with which you can not go wrong.

courier shirt

I feel as though perhaps I showed you this short-sleeved Madewell top already this season at some point but I’m going ahead and doing it again anyway, because it’s got a certain tomboyish appeal that charms me.

I am not the world’s biggest fan of a peplum, but here I think it totally works because it’s on such a clean-lined piece.

crew popover

Just a simple, clean popover, easy as you please.

drape front

drape-front top is the very embodiment of slouch.

I JUST saw someone on the G train this morning in the most perfect-fitting white long-sleeve button-down with rolled-up sleeves, well-fitting medium wash jeans, and what I think were cognac Korkease sandals. Plus a gold cuff and a leather-banded wristwatch. I felt bad for staring but her whole look was so perfectly understated and cool that I wanted to try and reevaluate my current white button-downs that aren’t doing anything for me. And here we are.

Always love a white shirt. And while I might not love all the styles you’ve shown us, I do appreciate the thoughtfully curated selection.

I love the look of white shirts, but have a hard time pulling it off. I have a pale, pink complexion with blonde hair. I tend to wear more black or saturated colors. Any suggestions for making a white shirt work?

I’m a huge fan! My favorite of late is by Frank & Eileen…”The Eileen” fit is perfect for those of us that have a little meno-pooch. It’s expensive, but worth it!

White reminds me of snow. Yes, it is snowing not too far from where I live. And so, just like that, summer is officially over. It is fall. Thoughts shift to sweaters and boots.
