A party in a top, part 5

Screen Shot 2016-05-26 at 1.50.09 PM

I usually wait until the holidays to do my party in a top posts, since the kind of event they were inspired by—crowded gatherings where all anyone takes note of is what you’re wearing from the waist up—happen around that time of year. But there have been recent requests for a warmer-weather version, and it is suddenly nothing if not toasty here in New York, so let’s have at it. This pretty butterfly print would probably be too girly for me on a flowy-er shape, but I like it just fine on a button-down.

My favorite color combination + a chevron print = almost too much excellent.

I am similarly besotted by this lush floral: the colors are just so exactly right, somehow.

This is the loud, craven party in a top that gets shut down by the police, and that everyone talks about for years.

A really graphic, slightly retroish star print.

This silhouette has gotten very popular over the past few seasons, which I understand: it exposes an almost universally flattering part of the body (the shoulders) while covering a sometimes problematic one (the upper arms) all in one fell swoop.

Thursday trifecta

Screen Shot 2016-05-26 at 11.38.19 AM

I bring you coasters, mostly because I’ve been looking for a new set, and—as I have related in the past—news is what happens to editors. First up: I am so in love with the improbable color combination here that I wish it were a dress.

This braided version is like a cute little mini-rug.

These are so fun and bright, but still also sophisticated enough not to look silly.

Put some prep in your step

ines de la

I always love when women mix preppy pieces in with more fashiony items—like for instance, how fantastic does Mme Ines de la Fressange look here in her black Lacoste shirt, multiple necklaces, and armful of bangles? It’s a style I am increasingly drawn to as my menagerie of tattoos continues to grow, as it both balances things out and contrasts appealingly.  And it comes off so excellently effortless—Ines might have in reality sweated the particulars of this outfit for some time before running out the door, but the net effect is very I-just-threw-this-on.

lacoste

I think you have to be pretty damn cool to look cool in a Lacoste shirt, and I’m not at all sure I am. But I’d like to try.

crew belt

Today, I am wearing this J. Crew belt with a cream-colored slouchy Maria Cornejo top and army pants, and it provides a nice—but not overwhelming—burst of bright.

Tretorns are about as classic, classic prep as it gets. I like the idea of wearing them with cuffed boyfriend jeans or a denim A-line skirt.

sunhat

bucket hat is so Lauren Hutton 70s prep, especially in the khaki.

And because Memorial Day looms: as timeless a waxed canvas weekender duffle as you could hope to find—from LL Bean, natch.

Miracle product of the moment

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 11.02.08 AM

My hair has, for as long as I can recall, refused to get with the program. It’s fine, it frizzes, and is as dry as the desert at high noon. Not helping matters is the fact that I like to wear it straight (its natural state is ringlet-tight curls) which requires no small amount of of heat styling, so also: it’s damaged. But when I use All in One Milk from Davines, I can almost trick myself into thinking I was born with good hair. I spray a pretty liberal amount on before blow-drying, comb through (it’s an excellent detangler) and then style away. Afterward, my hair is soft and shiny and decidedly un-poufy, and it smells really nice too, which isn’t nothing.
