Gift Guide rule #1: give beauty products pretty enough to display

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 11.28.56 AM

Just as a for instance: I don’t even especially care what this, Miu Miu‘s first fragrance, smells like (Lily of the Valley and Akigalawood, apparently); I just want it to chic up on my vanity.

The milky pale pink of this Mason Pearson brush takes it from being a slightly workaday gift to something kind of special.

I discovered this Davines moisturizer at the Miami Standard last winter and fell in love: it’s ultralight, very nearly fragrance free, and comes in such 70s-Laurel-Canyon-chic packaging.

The best presentation of a makeup color palette  I’ve seen all season—and it’s makeup color palette season.

Nobody but nobody does attractive packaging like Soap & Paper Factory, and theit stuff—like this shea butter moisturizer—works great too.

YSL has been reviving its lip print on dresses and blouses and whatnot off and on since the 70s, and this palette provides such a satisfying frisson of glam.

Bella Freud’s clever graphics work so well on this quartet of mini-candles.

cremede corps

I am on a Peter Max kick again (see here for evidence) and am so digging this funkadelic, supersize eternally popular moisturizer from Kiehl’s. (Here, if you’re interested, is a very handy—and similarly Maxified—set of travel-sized Kiehl’s items.

diptique votice

This is a freaking Diptique Votive Calendar, and it is both stupendous and sure to sell out soon.

Sale notes from all over

carly boucle

Let’s start off with Net A Porter, since they were the first to hit my inbox. And of the selection at Net A Porter, let’s begin with this boucle jacket from Iro, which I have eyed many times; it gives you the chic of a winter white without being quite so impractical.

j brand pencil skirt

As a lady with hips, pencil skirts scare me. But this denim version, which I purchased over the summer, actually makes me feel va-va-voom rather than lumpy.

clare v clutch

I have wanted this Clare Vivier clutch since it hit stores a few months ago, and I am not even a clutch person.

illesteva net

Blue-lensed sunglasses are so cool—especially for winter, somehow.

dreyfuss dreslyn

And now we move on to the site for LA boutique The Dreslyn, where absolutely everything is 25% off. They’ve got pieces on offer that never go on sale. Like this Jerome Dreyfuss bag, for instance.

cdg cardi

Also: a cardi with the Comme des Garcons heart I so adore.

vince cashmere

And why not a delectable cashmere poncho?

rag bone distressed

Next stop on our tour is Barneys, where it pleases me not to report that a lot of the marked down items are summer holdovers and not that exciting. But there are gems to be rooted out: these Rag & Bone jeans have exactly what I’m going for lately: a nice boyfriend-y cut, and cropped hem.

lotan cardi

I’ve had a thing for this Nili Lotan sweater since I saw it in her Tribeca store a while back. It’s a very throw-it-on-and-suddenly-your-outfit-says-something kind of a piece.

atm trousers

Just a smart little pair of black trousers, and you can’t beat that.

isabel coat

I am showing a back view of this Isabel Marant coat because it is styled annoyingly, with a top that makes it look quite unappealing (which is, I am certain, why they have every size available when it has sold out pretty much everywhere else). I bought it at the top of the season, and find it to be a very appealing piece: practical, comfortable, and French girl all at once. And I’m not even bitter that it is now judiciously marked down and I paid retail, because I have worn it to absolute pieces.

Finally, over at Shopbop they’re having one of their the-more-you-spend-the-more-you-save sales: shell out $250 on goods and you get 15% off; $500 earns you 20%, and $1000 and over, a whopping 25%.  And—unlike Shopbop’s Friends and Family events, this one comes with no lengthy list of brand exclusions. Which pleases me because I can show you items like this Canada Goose jacket, which was totally not on sale during their last F&F.

I always feel the need to point out an opportunity to buy R13 jeans for less, and these are a particularly good pair—and flattering too, which is rare for grey jeans.

A rock-solid moto jacket  from BLK DNM, at outfit that knows its way around a leather jacket.

My friend and associate Andrea Linett lives in these these faux-shearling-lined Rachel Comey booties.

Top 5 of the week: Toggle coats

capucine toggle coat

Is there any article of outerwear as simultaneously chic and cute as the toggle coat? Here is my favorite French Vogue editor of all the French Vogue editors, Capucine Safyurtlu, wearing a very nearly perfect one.

And here’s an option from J Crew that I like every bit as well.

The natural-colored rope on the toggles here is a nice touch.

camel option is quite 70s preppy.

If I wasn’t already knee-deep in parkas, I’d totally go for this.

Loden is very weekendy-cool.

Tuesday links

  • Not sure I’ve ever met a slideshow of pictures from disco’s New York glory days that I didn’t like. (The Cut; ever-so-slightly NSFW)
  • Hard to argue with who gets the #1 spot on this ranking of the best onscreen superheroines of all time. (Vulture)
  • The personal jet pack is almost a reality and because I am—in more respects than I care to admit—an 11 year-old boy, this news excites me a lot. (Atlas Obscura)
  • As boring as watching paint dry, indeed. (Mental Floss)
  • And finally: I’m so excited about the return of Transparent that I’m bringing you yet another—this time pretty meaty—trailer. (Kottke)
