White jeans for fall don’t need to be tricky

You’ve just got to keep things simple—by getting some rather painstakingly specific details right. But before we move forward: can you see why I am always banging on about how you shouldn’t put your cropped jeans away at the end of summer because they’re awesome with ankle boots?

And here is the exact Current Elliott pair I’ve got on in that picture, which are so good I purchased a pair in regular blue denim too. They have a nice slouchy skinny cut, just how I like, and unless you are eleventy feet tall, like the model here likely is, they will hit you a good bit lower on the ankle.

I bought this lightweight cashmere crew neck by Equipment during Shopbop’s Friends and Family event because it filled a very specific hole in my wardrobe: it’s cut like a t-shirt—nice and body-skimming—and good when your ensemble calls for something more refined than your usual bulktastic sweaters. Here’s one from Everlane that’s probably not as thin or tailored, but costs about half as much.

And to add the just-right  touch of slouchiness: my Jolie Laide Roll & Tuck tee, tucked in the front, loose in the back. This really is in many ways the perfect tee—I wear mine so much it’s a little gross—and right this very instant you can get it for 20% off by entering GOACA20 at checkout. Do not delay, people: this offer expires on midnight, October 29.

I have spent a lot of time deconstructing why some women are so unstoppably chic in certain very simple ensembles while the rest of us just look like we’re wearing the same old boring thing, and when it comes to jeans and a sweater, here’s a little styling trick I’ve noticed: You will immediately look a good three times more pulled-together if you wear a belt and then fake-tuck the front of the sweater. It obviously only works with pretty light sweaters, but I promise it totally works.

The boots I’m wearing here were discovered at the bottom of a bin at a No. 6 sample sale last summer, and alas, they made nothing like them this season. You could go with something similar in a clog boot, but for me it’s all about that wedge heel, which is why I bring you this little slice of (splurgy) perfection. And here’s your significantly less expensive option.

  1. You are looking painfully chic in that – it’s perfection. I love white jeans in fall so hard. One of my favorite get-ups last year was my white skinnies, a thrifted off-white big ole sweater with tank underneath, and my black ankle boots. I need to pull that bad-boy out and wear it again, if we could get rid of these 80 degree days!!

  2. Great outfit, you’re the Jedi master of the half-tuck. Looking so long and lean too in cropped white jeans. #noeasyfeat

Hello you in white jeans… you look incredible.

I would lurve more posts like this! Thanks for the item by item breakdown!

So how does the 1/2 tuck work when one has a bit o’ the tummy pooch?

    • y.k. says:

cant say my lower abdominal situation is a rock hard plain,
so the 1/2 tuck just has to be done w/ care –
out& loose in the back and a bit puffy in the front –
not talking tucked like a sheet in the army.

It’s ridiculous, but I am deeply afraid of white jeans on me–the risk of highlighting every bump and flaw, etc. But I adore the look on others (you look AMAZING, Kim). Maybe I’ve just got to find the right pair. Thanks for the inspiration….xxx

Very cute outfit! I do love a nice crop. I do not agree that they make people look shorter. I mean, maybe if what you’re really wearing is gauchos. But these look great.

The outfit is spectacular and you look French chic. Just this morning I broke down and bought a much needed new pair of black ankle boots (more motorcycle gone upscale––Via Spiga v-bara) which I think will work with my whites. Love the breakdown w/explanation of why it works. Great Monday post!

    what exactly is a “fake-tuck?”

  9. Linda Kerr says:

Style icon Tonne Goodman wears white jeans all year ’round, as part of her uniform. Often with black loafers and a black turtleneck. Often with Charvet scarves. Wish I could post a pic of her here….Google her.

  10. Valerie says:

I am so high waisted that a half-tuck looks ridiculous on me. So wish I could wear it so effortlessly, though!

I’d really love to clone this outfit! (Do you mind seeing GOACA clones running around NYC?) And the breakdown with your editor’s eye is very helpful! I’m pulling my white jeans out of the “Summer” bin as we speak.
