I spent half the summer searching for the right denim skirt, and finally settled on one that fit my specs (A-line; no-nonsense wash; knee-length hem) even though I wasn’t exactly electrified by it. This is the one I should have held out for, and would have, had I only known it was coming down the pike: the long, slim—but not too slim— silhouette is retro without being obviously so, and kind of sexy too, in an unexpected way. Truly a textbook wear-it-now-wear-it-later weekend piece too: perfect with sandals right this second, and with boots come fall.
A coated denim skirt is the perfect way to get a leather-type vibe without having to fork over too much cash.
This super-clean black stretch denim skirt with nifty side zipper detail is so very office-worthy.
A simple, unadorned, and delightfully under $100 option.
The slit’s on the daring side, but the rest of this A-line skirt plays things so straight that it doesn’t come off as too much.

Oooh, I dunno. The models look decent, but I would struggle to style it so it doesn’t skew mumsy, frumpy, or 90s (or maybe it’s just that these stiff skirts don’t do much for my short-legged, hourglass figure).

I’m with you Fiona. I love the idea of a denim skirt, and keep buying them and end up looking way too prarie-home-school mom.
(And I actually had — and loved — that first skirt, in the mid-90s, albeit the Gap version).

A delightful variety!

That coated black denim by Current/Elliott is really tempting me. How does the sizing run, does anyone know? I currently wear a dark blue denim seamed pencil skirt from Earnest Sewn that I unearthed from my closet, bought probably in 2005, and that is a 29 but kind of loose on me and sits low on the hips…

I love these skirts! It’s a more elegant way of wearing jeans.

I’m not a fan of skirts now, they eventually ride up on my torso à la Ed Grimley. This wasn’t the case years ago, when I was pooch-free. I do love the last skirt though.

Dang, guys! Now I’m remembering why I don’t wear close fitting skirts… But that one by Mother is tempting!

Love the Mother skirt, esp with those boots. Also have the problem, though, of these sorts of stiffer skirts riding up on me, probably because my waist is so small relative to my hips…would love to be able to pull it off though!

I cannot even imagine having that problem, I have the opposite issue. Love love that first skirt WITH BOOTS.

I love the mother denim one and the coated black is pretty swell too.
Especially since I am currently lusting after a leather skirt that I’m to guilt ridden to purchase. The Anna wrap skirt…. Sigh.

The black coated denim is pretty cool. I could see it becoming a versatile piece. You could dress is up with a silk blouse and heels or go in the opposite direction with a tshirt and sneakers.

I recently got that Madewell one. I have worn it twice, and I really love it. It will be great with tights and boots, too.

Heather, how is the sizing in the Madewell skirt? Did you order your normal jean size? Thanks for your help!

I love the Mother denim skirt on ShopBop, but why does it look so scary on other sites (in supposedly the same wash?

Got the Current Elliott coated denim. LOVE! Thanks, Kim!

Omigosh! I love this post. These are so incredibly modern and sexy (inspiring me to continue to try to reduce my over 40 slight thigh problem)! … and yet, the styles also harken back to an earlier age when I made my own denim skirt by ripping the seams in the legs and reconfiguring! I also recognize the front zip style as another that I had when I was younger in the 70s and 80s! My goal is to wear a pencil skirt this fall and to wear it well – I may invest in one of these!
