Making time

Screen Shot 2014-05-30 at 1.21.24 PM

I’m feeling nostalgic for those days when people hung good old-fashioned clocks in their homes, instead of relying on the cable box and microwave to tell them what time it was.  I also just like clocks as objects, and have the precisely the right little patch of wall in my kitchen for one. This poppy little model, a collaboration between Heath Ceramics and the design firm House Industries, seems about right.

Cheap and chic of the week

two band sandals

I’m a complete sucker for sandals that mix natural and metallic leathers: they make a strong statement, but at the same time remain nicely versatile. These cost about three times less than any other similar pair I’ve seen this season, and are every ounce as cute.

  • Check out these gorgeous portraits by Julia Margaret Cameron, the Victorian-era photographer who didn’t start taking pictures until she was the 48 year-old mother of six, and about whom I knew nothing of until exactly now. (Visual News)
  • Behold, the suitcase scooter. (Laughing Squid)
  • The fold-out sofa that contained a 17th-century Venetian painting, the 11th-century Chinese bowl that went for $3, and more impossibly lucky flea market finds. (Mental Floss)
  • Will there be an Ab Fab movie? (Wifey)
  • Really amusingly bad TV show titles. (Atlantic Wire)

Print(s) of the week

Screen Shot 2014-05-28 at 2.01.49 PM

Three hyper-graphic florals, all from the Net a Porter sale, because I appear to be in deep sale mode at the moment, and also because nobody brings the prints like Net a Porter brings the prints. A little bit of this Etro silk top  goes a wicked long way: it’s the type of piece you want peeking out from underneath a blazer for a quick pop of fun.

Shroomy in the very best possible way.

Blue and black is always a winner in my book, but I also like that this reminds me of the modish Mary Quant logo from the 60s.
