Capsule wardrobe: spring pants

Screen Shot 2014-03-19 at 7.25.56 PM

I have received a few requests from readers to share my must-have list of spring pants—much like the one on tops I quite recently provided for you. And I’m actually glad you asked, because I’m looking to stop defaulting to denim so constantly and rotate in some new options, many of which already exist in my closet, lonely and starved for attention. First up: The easiest thing in the world to sub in for jeans is a pair of casual chinos; they’re always so nice and unexpected in a color other than khaki. Traditionally, I have liked them sized up and super-slouchy, but lately that’s striking me as possibly a bit sloppy. This pair from J Brand is roomy enough to let me feel like myself, but tailored enough to look neat.

What could be better than the classic black trouser being given the elastic waist pull-up treatment? This wins my vote for the pant I most want to wear on a plane when I need to look good after the flight. (Check out this less pricey option)

Seasons come, seasons go, my love for cargo pants  remains. They’re a classic by now, and nothing looks better than when you wear them with a white tee or button down and a big pair of earrings. (here’s a somewhat more casual pair I love from Current Elliott).

I am coming around to the idea that we might all be better off with one wildly printed pair of pants in our closets. These have such a classic cut that it keeps the crazy in check—which is what makes them work.

A classic black cropped pant never hurt anyone.

New thing I really want of the day

clog sandals

Usually I try to mix things up here at Girls of a Certain Age, but today the news is all footwear, and I’m not fighting it. I have been doing such a good job of avoiding No. 6, which as has been previously noted, is located in exceedingly close proximity to my new home. But last night the wily little shopping demons inside my head got the best of me, and I found myself going online to have a quick little innocent scan. And that’s when I discovered these two tone clog sandals, which I’m pretty sure are the new cutest thing ever, and definitely what I’ll be wearing into the ground once  warmer weather hits.

Suddenly, mules

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 7.40.30 PM

Not traditional dainty lady mules, but edgier and somewhat clunkier ones. Perfect for that transitional period when boots are a bit too much, but strappy sandals not nearly enough. This one from Costume National is very severe and fashiony.

Wheras this is more cloggy and laid back. Also: it’s a dead ringer for this much more expensive version from Rag & Bone.

This open toed version is so deathly chic that I’m almost willing to overlook that it’s probably not the most walkable thing ever to come down the pike.

The naturals

Screen Shot 2014-03-17 at 1.12.53 PM

Magazine editors are the pickiest beauty consumers I know—they have access to everything for free, all the time. And so when more than a few of them go full-on obsessive about any one thing—as they are right now for uber-natural line Beautycounter—I generally pay attention. The company is radical in its approach to creating clean products, which—once you start really paying attention to what’s dumped into our makeup and shampoos and cleansers—becomes a very appealing proposition. I’m liking the body wash, which has the best I-want-to-smell-like-this-first-thing-in-the-morning citrus-mint scent, and the body lotion, which goes on lighter and faster than any I’ve ever tried.
