Monday links

  • These costume test photos from classic films are straight-up fascinating and an excellent way to waste several minutes of your Monday. (Flavorwire)
  • Daft Punk has created a bunch of 70s-inspired merch advertisements, and they are dead-on. (Laughing Squid)
  • Ford’s answer to that Cadillac ad with the really arrogant guy talking about American superiority is brilliant. (Adweek)
  • Literary characters based on real people. (Mental Floss)
  • How many places on this map of the most popular attractions in each state of the union have you been to? (Time)

Cheap and chic of the week

coasters thomas paul

One day, I will feel sufficiently grown up to stop employing magazines and books as coasters and get myself the real deal. And when I do, I might very well go for this set: four butterflies on melamine, for an astonishing $18.

Never say never

Screen Shot 2014-03-29 at 3.46.13 PM

Skinny pants and my hips get along so poorly that I have just about given up on ever finding a pair that works (even a dog eventually stops going to the electric fence, right?) Still, something about this cropped twill pair seemed promising: they’re from J. Brand, a company whose jeans and chinos have always worked for me, and they’ve got some stretch, which never hurts. So I rolled the dice and placed an order, and am delighted to report that they fit so well my friend Stephen said they look like they were made for me, and does it get much better than that?

Wednesday links

beach trash

  • Beach trash, artfully arranged. (Laughing Squid)
  • The remarkably pretty manhole covers of Japan. (Flavorwire)
  • I love this essay by a woman in her twenties confessing her forbidden love of Eileen Fisher. (The Cut)
  • Apparently we wear our best outfits to work on Mondays, and then it’s all downhill from there. (Daily Mail)
  • Recently deceased character actor James Rebhorn  (you know him; this guy) left behind a self-penned obit, and it’s a weepie. (Atlantic Wire, A.V. Club)

Taking requests

My sister in law Shanna needs an attractive, professionally-appropriate-but-not-boring black handbag that is big enough to accommodate her Macbook Air. This was a fun one. I am kind of in love with this endlessly chic and truly goes-with-everything number from Coach.

For the person whose bag is never big enough: this up-for-everything messenger style.

Screen Shot 2014-03-23 at 7.05.40 PM

Probably my favorite: the vertical shape just feels so modern and chick-on-the-go.

A lot of elegance for something that rings in under $25.

Another, more refined take on the messenger bag, with a strong graphic zipper.

An absolutely perfect saddle bag, for the more laid-back professional.

Print of the week

Screen Shot 2014-03-21 at 12.08.43 PM

I’m always attracted to a geometric print—the more graphic and bright and contrasty the better. But they’re not the easiest things to pull off, from the whole it is wearing you perspective. Better to go with a more subdued palette like the one on this dress by A Piece Apart (which, can I also just say, is exactly the kind of throw-it-on-and-go piece I used to live in when I worked in an office?)
